Opening Netherlands-Russia year.
2013 is the Netherlands-Russia year, a year in which the Netherlands and Russia emphasize their long bilateral relations. Therefore, Queen Beatrix has invited President Vladimir Putin to Amsterdam to open the Netherlands-Russia year. The opening will take place this Monday 8 April at the Hermitage museum. Due to this event, the Hermitage and Van Gogh museum will be closed all day on 8 April.
On the same day, Putin will attend a meeting with Prime-Minister Rutte of The Netherlands. Putin's visit to the city causes quite a lot of agitation under proponents of gay rights in The Netherlands. In Russia gays don't have equal rights as straight people and therefore demonstrations will be held in Amsterdam to show Putin what the Dutch think of this.
